The biggest news for www.musicbycato.com in 2005 was the completion of his score to the dark comedy feature "Mini's First Time" (starring Nikki Reed, Alec Baldwin, Carrie-Anne Moss, Jeff Goldblum and Luke Wilson, directed by Nick Guthe and produced by Kevin Spacey) that premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival on May 1, 2006. The score, produced by Cato for Creative Soundscapes, combines an eclectic blend of electronica, female solo voice and acoustic elements. "Mini's First Time" will have its theatrical premiere at the end of July 2006, starting with Los Angeles and New York.

In addition, Cato also scored the feature documentary film "Truth In Terms Of Beauty" for 3-time Oscar™ nominee, director and writer Vince DiPersio. The documentary tells the amazing life story of legendary photographer Herman Leonard. This film, executive produced by Elizabeth Avellan, will also premiere in 2006. The score to "Truth In Terms Of Beauty" is co-published by Creative Soundscapes and a score CD is available (please contact us).

"Works by Cato", an eclectic and expanding collection of compositions by Cato, has continually been updated by Creative Soundscapes with new compositions, many of which have already been licensed in major motion picture trailers and commercials.

Also nearing release in 2006, after having been pushed back for rewrites and remixes, is the debut CD from Cato's recording project Eccotonic, which has already seen tracks licensed by network television and generated label interest in both the US and Europe. This includes a compilation release on the Pacha label of the track "Flow Motion", the title track of the CD.

The Creative Soundscapes website is back online! After some busy months of music production, changes are pending with both the website and our general operations as we move into 2004. Read on for more about this later.

Far from being an inactive period, 2003 has seen Creative Soundscapes supply music to many varied projects. These include more feature film trailers than ever before, like Cold Creek Manor, Once Upon A Time In Mexico (theatrical), Underworld, Mona Lisa Smile (theatrical), Basic, Identity, Seabiscuit, X-Men 2 and The Haunted Mansion.

Cato also scored a national Chrysler commercial launching the Crossfire car, effectively being a part of replacing the failed (and very expensive) use of a certain, very famous singer that had accompanied their recent commercials. It seems the agency/client figured that a healthy dose of Cato's hardcore electronica was just the ticket to bring younger demographics back into focus. We did not argue.

Creative Soundscapes just released the debut EP from Eccotonic, which is Cato's new recording project slated for a full CD release in 2004. This project brings together different sonic flavors, vocal and instrumental talents to produce an electronica sound unique to Eccotonic. Gary Ford at Different Waves in New York is currently representing Eccotonic and actively seeking further distribution for this exciting project. Please email info@eccotonic for further info.

Towards the end of 2003 Cato also scored the indie feature film "Jimmy Bones" for Abundance Productions. Starring Louis Mandylor (perhaps best known for his role as Nia Vardalos brother in My Big Fat Greek Wedding) this film is a gritty, noirish crime drama about an ex-con who cannot escape his past. It opened to great acclaim at the New York International Independent Film & Video Festival in November, 2003 were it won the Audience Award for Best Feature Film. Louis Mandylor won for Best Actor.

Although we will still be maintaining and expanding the existing Creative Soundscapes Music Library, 2004 will see the company focusing more on artist projects and releases, as well as original scoring for film, television and interactive media. First and foremost will be the release of a full length Eccotonic CD. In addition Cato will be working on more CD projects, alone or in collaboration with other artists. These CDs will be available through the CS website as well as through other distribution channels, and will be made available for licensing in film, television and interactive media. More information will follow as these projects develop.

This website, along with eccotonic.com, is now hosted on a new service that will enable us to stream Quicktime movies and mp3 audio in the near future. These additions will appear online in the coming months.

The last few months have been exciting ones for Creative Soundscapes. Resident composer Cato recently completed his work on "Freelancer", a much anticipated sci-fi/ space trader computer game by Digital Anvil/Microsoft. His work on this game started nearly three years ago. In addition to the music for the Rheinland part of the game, Cato was asked at the last minute by the game's director to write additional music to replace that of another composer. The game should hit store shelves early in 2003.

Most recently it was confirmed that the marketing team behind the highly anticipated sequel "Charlie's Angels 2" decided to use our composition "Ravenous "as a prominent lead-in piece in their brand new theatrical trailer. This license comes as part of numerous licenses recently secured with Columbia Pictures through Music Junkies, including Panic Room, Enough, Trapped and Half Past Dead. Other major feature film marketing licenses include Red Dragon and Star Trek: Nemesis. Many more are in the pipeline.

The feature documentary "Modern Tribalism ", scored by Cato in 2001, was released on DVD on October 22nd. If you haven't seen it, now's the time to head out to the video store. Exploring the theme of how the modern human increasingly is rediscovering and reinventing/personalizing ancient tribal rituals, "Modern Tribalism " has won prizes, received rave reviews and screened at film festivals all over the country. This month it is headed for a major, international documentary film festival in Amsterdam. "Modern Tribalism " is definitely worth your time. Go see it!

The mood is decidedly light and positive at Creative Soundscapes these days since we are looking back at a second quarter which has already brought our year-to-date result way past our grand total for 2001.

In addition to securing a barrage of new licenses of our music for high profile trailer campaigns for movies like The Hulk, Minority Report, Mothman Prophecies, The Sum Of All Fears and Unfaithful (click here for a complete list of our feature film marketing credits), Creative Soundscapes have completed two national, 30 sec. commercial spots for Charles Schwab and their agency GSD&M.

On a more technical note these past weeks has seen Creative Soundscapes' studio facilities undergoing a major upgrade incl. new Mac and PC systems, high end analog and digital gear from Cranesong, Alesis, Focusrite, MOTU, Clavia, Access and Emagic. Further upgrades, incl. a brand new, fully automated mixing console is planned for the near future.

Resident composer Cato has also scored the documentary film "People Of Earth", a highly entertaining look at people with various "alien" experiences that will be screening this summer and was recently honored by being accepted as a participant in the 2002 ASCAP Film Scoring Workshop that will take place during July and August.

Finally, "Modern Tribalism" has been picked up for both world-wide DVD/VHS video release and for cable/broadcast by major distributors. "Modern Tribalism" has been remixed in 5.1 by Kenny Klimak at Barking Dog Sound in Los Angeles. "Modern Tribalism" has also logged another batch of festivals with extremely positive results.

The first quarter of 2002 is turning out to be a great start of the year for Creative Soundscapes and the music of Cato.

As part of several new licenses for feature film marketing, Paramount Pictures recently elected to use the composition "Hidden Agenda" to open the theatrical trailer for the new Harrison Ford starrer, "K-19: The Widowmaker". Other recent feature film marketing licenses include music for "Signs" (Touchstone), "Sorority Boys" (Disney/Buena Vista) and last but not least the opening of the SuperBowl spot for "Spider-man" (Columbia).

Creative Soundscapes and Cato also recently completed two original scoring projects for director Carolyn Coal. The first of these is "We Are Texas", which is a film profiling the University Of Texas at Austin (the 9th biggest university in the country). The second is"The Passenger", a dramatic short subject produced by Mandalay Entertainment for client Enroute to promote their new 360 degree video camera system. "The Passenger" will be released on CD-ROM which will allow the viewer to choose camera "points of view" from a 360 degree palette.
